Just Read Week!

     

I’m so excited to kick off Just Read Week in my class! I love this quote in my classroom. Such a great reminder to read, read, read!

I already have SO many Dr. Seuss books in my collection, but I couldn’t help myself when I saw these for $5.00 at Target. What a steal!

                       

          When students come into the classroom tomorrow (or the next time we have school due to SNOW!), this fun birthday invitation will be waiting for them! We’ll be having a great book CELEBRATION. I’ll be carving out a lot of time in the day for students to cozy up in a comfy corner or nook and go on an adventure with their favorite book.

                                

     I printed and laminated these cute bookmarks to help hold their pages as they read. I wrote a sweet message on the back for each student. I know they will LOVE these!

                

              

Students will be keeping track of how much they read at home throughout the month of March with this reading recording sheet. Each night they read, they will add a smiley face or star. If they can fill it up by the end of the month, they’ll earn a special prize from me! I made this one in black and white too to save on ink!                       

                                                             

This week we’ll also be doing an author study about a very special author! Below you’ll see the cover and some of the inside pages of the report:

               

    

         

 

      

We’ll also be using many different reading response sheets to write about the stories we are reading. Here are a few of the ones we’ll be using:

     

          I know my kiddos will love this one! They can write a postcard about the story they are reading to a friend, family member, or even to the author!

                                                                               

   

       

They’ll be THRILLED to see these awesome pencils waiting for them to use inside their caddies. We are always in desperate need of some freshly sharpened pencils!

               

And, I’ll be switching up word work with three SILLY activities!

 

This one is called, “That’s Just SILLY!” Students have to read the sentence on each card and re-write it with correct capitalization, punctuation, and spelling. Then, they have to illustrate the sentence!

     

  

Another word work activity we’ll be doing this week is “Silly Word Scramble.” Students have to make as many NEW words with the words, “birthday” and “celebrate.”

         

            

And, “It’s Time to Rhyme” will be added! Students have to look closely at the two words on the card and determine if they rhyme or not. If they do rhyme, they have to record the pair on the recording sheet and use BOTH words to make a silly sentence! I also provided my students with an answer key so that they can check to see if they were correct or not. This will be a great activity for my friends who are still approaching fluency!
