I’m stepping back in time a bit (before spring break) to bring you a little onomatopoeia fun and to share a few fun books and activities that we used! What better time to teach onomatopoeias than during rainy season, right?
We started off by reading a few rainy day books, including this darling one…
This book is so stinking cute! The little boy, Marcus, is bummed about having to stay inside on a rainy day until his mom tells him to listen for the rain music. This book is filled with all kinds of onomatopoeias!
After we read Rain Music, we brainstormed some of the onomatopoeias we heard in the story using this sweet anchor chart inspired by my adorable friend, Vicky. Check out here cute onomatopoeia ideas here. I knew my kids would get a kick out of the ears (which they DID)! Thanks, sweet girl!
We also completed this fun little umbrella activity inspired by the precious Cara Carroll. You can find her onomatopoeia post here. My kids LOVED completing this little activity. It just so happened that I had some umbrella scrapbook paper from an old pack. Perfect, right? I love when something like that happens! I wish it occurred more often…ha!
We took her idea a little bit further and added an onomatopoeia story at the bottom. This story says, “Drip! Drip! The rain fell. Hurry home and let’s watch TV and drink hot chocolate.” Sounds like my kind of rainy day…how about you? Hot chocolate and TV? Yes, please!
The only that’s missing is a big ole bag of poppin’ popcorn, which is just what we added to complete our onomatopoeia rainy day!
For this cute activity, I gave each student a piece of popcorn. They had to read the word on the popcorn piece and then decide if there word was an onomatopoeia or not. If they got an onomatopoeia piece, they could place it on the bag. Otherwise, their popcorn piece was “burnt.” HA! Of course, afterwards, we had to treat ourselves with the real thing!
How do you teach onomatopoeias? Leave a comment telling me all about it below!
Um... this is too cute! I do not teach onomatopoeia as fun as you do. I am taking these ideas and running with them! Thanks so much for the ideas! Love your blog, and would love it if you'd come over and check out mine!
