the book nook (anti-bullying books)

Photobucket

This week’s Book Nook is all about anti-bullying books. March 1st is the “official” anti-bully day, but why wait until then to read some great stories that promote a bully-free classroom?

These are my favorite anti-bullying books. Some of these may be more familiar to you than others; however, I guarantee you’ll love them all!

The Recess Queen
Spaghetti in a Hot Dog Bun
Enemy Pie
Chrysanthemum
Stand Tall Molly Lou Melon
Hooway for Wodney Wat
The Juice Box Bully
Don’t Laugh at Me
Howard B. Wigglebottom Learns About Bullies
How to Lose All Your Friends

One anti-bullying book that holds a special place in my heart is Hooway for Wodney Wat. This book is just DARLING. It’s about a little rodent who can’t pronounce /r/ and is often teased because of it. Poor little guy! It’s a perfect story that teaches children they can succeed and triumph, even if they are different.

This is an excellent activity to do after reading the book. It helps students see that even though we are different, we can still be friends! Click {HERE} to download it for free.

I also blogged about these fun bully-free posters awhile back. You can grab them for free {HERE}.

What activities or books do you use to teach your students to be bully-free?

  1. Your posters are in my room and we refer to them often! I'm lucky this year because my kiddos are extremely kind to eachother {it amazes me!}, but I love a good picture book anytime I have to give a "bullying" refresher. A lot of the books you mentioned are favorites of mine, but there's also a few new ones for me to check out. Thanks for all the ideas, Lyndsey!

  2. Thank you thank you for the posters! I am going to hang them in my classroom right away. We read "Just Kidding" by Trudy Ludwig. It might be a little high for first grade but it was really good. It's about a kid who teases another, but always follows it with "just kidding!" Sometimes kids don't realize that this is bullying so it had a great message.

  4. Thanks for the ideas Lyndsey! We added "Cool Tools" lessons this year as part of our PBIS and I'm always looking for books with a lesson for this social skill time.

  5. Wow! What perfect timing! I have a class of total angels (seriously...it's unfair to all the other teachers), but one of my precious babies just can't seem to grasp being a kind and caring friend. Can't wait to get some of these books and keep reinforcing!

  6. With a minimum of 16 dollars, you can accomplish a certain
total of followers, that is, if you prefer monthly rates.
You can even conduct market research to optimize the outcome
of Twitter marketing campaign. Compared to other advertising methods such are billboards, radio, TV or even advertising online,
this is definitely a very effective medium since it allows businesses to advertise their brand free to thousands of people on the internet.

  10. I like that standing up for what is right. I recall my daughter doing this, when children were teasing a girl that her father murdered the mother. That was so cruel. I was so proud of my daughter. She did not hesitate to stand up for this girl.
