Close Reading Summer Book Study!

If you’re interested in learning more about how to implement close reading in your classroom OR if you’ve already begun to implement close reading and you want to learn more, this post is FOR YOU!

The incredibly talented Tara West from Little Minds at Work and I are coming together this summer to bring you a book study ALL ABOUT CLOSE READING!

I’m SURE you know who Tara West is, but she deserves an introduction anyway! Tara is an OUTSTANDING kindergarten teacher who creates meaningful and engaging resources for her little ones! Everything she makes is so relevant and fun for kindergarteners. Tara and I both are very passionate about close reading. We cannot wait to share our love for close reading with you all.

For the book study, we chose the book, Close Reading in Elementary School.

image

Each week, we’ll be picking apart each chapter of the book and sharing LOTS of resources to help you implement close reading in your classroom.

Here’s a little summary of the book:

Many literacy experts believe close reading has the power to create strong, independent readers. But what does that really mean, and how does it work in the classroom? This book is your must-have guide to getting started! It provides step-by-step strategies and scaffolds for teaching close reading and improving students’ comprehension of complex texts. You will learn how to teach close reading based on text type, how to transition students through increasingly challenging texts, and how to use close reading as a springboard for close writes and close talks.

Looking for some close reading materials to help get you started in your classroom? Tara sells some AMAZING kindergarten fiction and non-fiction close reading resources in her shop. I also have some fun and engaging close reading resources in my shop that are geared for first and second grade students! Click on the images below to check them out.

Want to WIN A COPY of the book? All you have to do is leave your name and e-mail address in the comments below. I’ll choose a WINNER on Thursday, May 8th!

  1. Sounds like a fun book study! I've been wanting to figure out how to implement this in my classroom and balance it with the need to teach students how to read (phonics and sight words). We do guided reading groups with leveled texts, but close reading is totally different.
